What is First Comment? - Social Media Glossary

First Comment

A first comment is a comment you write ahead of time and schedule with your post, so it publishes after the post goes live.

What is a First Comment?

A first comment is the first comment on your own post, written by you. Instead of waiting until the post is live and adding it by hand, you write it while you schedule the post, and your scheduling tool publishes it after the post goes up.

People use a first comment to keep captions clean and put the extra details somewhere else. Common uses include hashtags, a link, a question for followers, a credit to a collaborator, or a promo code. It's a way to save a step, not a shortcut to more reach.

How first comments work on different platforms

Support depends on the network and the tool you use. In MeetEdgar, you can schedule a first comment for:

  • Instagram: Add a first comment with your hashtags or a question. The account needs to be connected through Meta. Links in Instagram comments aren't clickable.
  • Facebook: Use it for a link, a question or extra context.
  • LinkedIn: Use it for a link, a source or a follow-up point, and keep your caption focused on the main message.
In the MeetEdgar composer, click "Add first comment," choose your networks, write the comment once and schedule your post as usual.
