Stop Trying to Go Viral: Why Community Connection Beats 2 Million Views

Every social media content creator dreams of "the big one"—that breakout moment where the views climb into the millions and the notifications don't stop.
Recently, it happened to me. I posted a Reel of a vintage 3M bow maker on my personal account (If I’d recognized that it had virality potential, I would have posted it on MeetEdgar’s accounts). It was satisfying, nostalgic, and apparently exactly what the algorithm wanted. It hit 2.2 million views.
As the GM behind MeetEdgar, a platform built on the science of social media automation and scheduling, you’d think I’d be celebrating.
Instead, I was watching a masterclass in why virality is often a distraction from your actual business goals.
The "Viral" Reality Check
The video wasn’t created to drive growth or attention. I shared the video purely because I liked it, and then... the algorithm took over.
The numbers looked impressive on paper, but the reality was a disconnect:
- The Follower Gap: Out of 2.2 million viewers, only 780 chose to follow. While that more than doubled my small following, a 0.03% follow rate proves that the "reach" was wide but shallow.
- The Wrong Audience: These new followers are not going to stick around for the “hockey-mom” content I usually post from my account.
- The Engagement Hangover: My subsequent content saw a bump in engagement that vanished almost immediately. Why? Because I wasn't giving the "bow people" more bows. (Okay, I made one more bow video to see if I could get more views - it’s my second most viewed Reel with over 53K views).
For a brief moment, I wondered if I could somehow tailor my content to keep pleasing my new followers. But why? My public account is something I use to follow brands and to interact with content that resonates with me. I have some side endeavors on the go, but none of them are related to the people who followed me from the bow Reel.
Why You Should Stop Chasing the Algorithm
When you prioritize "going viral," you stop prioritizing your community and your values. Here is why chasing the "For You" page can actually hurt your brand:
1. It Confuses the Algorithm
Instagram and TikTok try to categorize your account. If you go viral with a random "oddly satisfying" video, the algorithms start showing your profile to people interested in that original content. When you return to your core topic, the algorithm shows it to those new followers, they scroll past it, and the platforms assume your content is no longer valuable.
2. Vanity Metrics Don't Pay the Bills
Reach is a "vanity metric." You can't take 2 million views to the bank. A small, dedicated community of 500 people who trust your expertise and buy your product is infinitely more valuable than 2 million strangers who liked a 19-second clip of a bow maker.
3. It Leads to Creator Burnout
Chasing trends is a rollercoaster that never stops. When you focus on "real connection" instead of "viral reach," the pressure to perform disappears. You start creating for people, not for robots.
How to Focus on Real Connection Instead
If you’re ready to get off the viral treadmill, here is how to pivot back to what matters:
- Define Your Core Pillars: Use tools like MeetEdgar to categorize your content. Ensure your posts consistently provide value to your specific niche, whether that’s educational tips, behind-the-scenes looks, or industry news.
- Prioritize Depth Over Breadth: Spend less time editing for the "hook" and more time replying to comments. One meaningful conversation in the DMs is worth more than a thousand "cool video" comments.
- Speak to Your "True Fans": Write your captions for the 500 people who already follow you. When you solve their problems and acknowledge their presence, you build the kind of loyalty that survives algorithm shifts.
The Bottom Line
My 2.2 million views were a fun experiment, but they weren’t with the communities I want to continue to engage with.
The goal of social media isn't to be seen by everyone; it’s to be seen by the right people. Stop trying to go viral. Start being real. Your community is waiting.
